I had a call from 08001560131 yesterday and it turned out to be Scottish Power asking me to make an appointment to have a smart meter installed. I've read quite a lot online about the various problems with smart meter installations that I've decided that I don't want the energy company to fit one for me.

I must admit that I've been expecting a call from Scottish Power as they've emailed me a couple of times about having one installed.. Extracts from their email read:

Great news. We're in Salisbury installing smart meters at no extra cost. Why not take the opportunity this time round to join millions of people across the UK that have already chosen smart?

90% are happy with their installation
85% feel they better understand their energy spend
81% think their energy bill is now accurate
79% are likely to recommend a smart meter

Why I don't want a Scottish Power Smart Meter

There are a few reasons why I don't want a smart meter installed, one of those is the cyber security aspect. I'm sure that the chances of the energy company's computer system being hacked is extremely low but I don't want to take that chance. The thought of the lights going off in Britain is too terrible to think about.

I've also read that the first generation of smart meters (known as “Smets 1”) will only function as a dumb meter if you change energy suppliers.I have also read reports that the 2nd generation of smart meters (known as “Smets 2”) can have communication problems..

I can understand that great if you didn't have to read your meter and give your readings to the energy company, especially if yours is in an awkward place. My electricity and gas meters and mounted on an outside wall to it's easy for me to take readings.

So there you go, if you've had a missed call from 08001560131 then it's from Scottish Power and they may be asking you if you want a smart meter installed..
